Sue Gaines Bennett, 87, died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 at Morning Pointe in Lexington.
She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Ola Vaughn Gaines. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Frank M. Bennett; and her brother, Billy Gaines.
Sue was born in Lexington but grew up in Lancaster, and graduated from Lancaster High School. She attended Bethel Women's College in Hopkinsville, and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a B.A. degree in Elementary Education. She taught kindergarten and first grade at Maxwell Elementary in Lexington, until the birth of her own children.
Sue was a devoted mother and a talented manager of the household, especially considering the many moves the family made over the years to seven different cities. She was an avid UK sports fan, enjoyed church activities, and loved spending time with friends and family, especially her beloved grandchildren. Mrs. Bennett is survived by her daughter, Kay Bennett Saffari (Behnam Saffari); her son, Frank Gaines Bennett (Jill Peterson Bennett); four grandchildren, Cyrus Saffari, Susie Saffari, Katherine Bennett and Francis Marion Bennett IV; a niece, Sue Gaines Preece; and a nephew, Ed Gaines.
Visitation is Thursday, Oct. 19 from 6-8 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 20 from 10-11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington. The funeral is Friday at 11 a.m. at the church. The burial will take place in Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The family requests donations to her church, Calvary Baptist, or to the Lexington Humane Society.
