Robert Ray Newman, 87, entered his eternal place of rest Friday, May 26, 2017.
He was born May 25, 1930, to the late William Arvel and Willie Carver Newman and spent his childhood years growing up in the Beech Creek community and graduated from Hughes-Kirk High School in 1948. He met his best friend and love of his life, Joyce Dean Mercer, in 1950 and they were married on Nov. 14, 1953, spending 62 wonderful years together.
Bob worked 23 years for Tennessee Valley Authority as a carpenter and was a long-time member of Hazel Creek Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who cared deeply for others and was firm in his faith. He enjoyed spending time with his trading buddies at flea markets and tractor shows and could never pass up a good deal.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; one sister, Mary Frances Blake; and one brother, James Lewis Newman.
He is survived by one daughter, Debbie Bauer, and husband Lewis, of Cave City; one son, Dr. Mark Newman, and friend, Peter Ajharn, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Billie Hadley (Randy), of Greenville, and Dorena Johannson (Leonard), of Browder; two grandsons, Robert Bauer, of Cave City, and Dr. William Bauer, of Albany, Ga.; one granddaughter, Sarah Carver, and husband, Mark, of Glasgow; and several very special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, with burial to follow in Hazel Creek Cemetery. Visitation began at 3 p.m. Monday and will continue until 8 p.m. and then again at 10 a.m. Tuesday before the service.
