Rachel Gillenwater Chawk


Rachel Gillenwater Chawk, a true Steel Magnolia who was devoted to her family, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019 in Clearwater, Florida.
Rachel was a native of Glasgow, Kentucky. She was the only child of the late Joel and Cordelia Gillenwater. Rachel graduated from Glasgow High School, where she played violin. She attended Transylvania University, studied pre-med and graduated from Vanderbilt University. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE, serving in World War II. She then worked for the former Howard Clinic in Glasgow as a registered medical technologist.
Rachel married Thomas W. Chawk of Lexington, Kentucky and had four sons. She was suddenly widowed and devoted formidable strength to raising her young sons alone in Florida. However, Rachel never forgot her hometown of Glasgow. She visited it frequently and supported local charities. She was a contributor to South Central Kentucky Cultural Center and Community Medical Care in Glasgow.
She is survived by her dear cousin, Madaline Britt Hammer, in Franklin, Kentucky. In Barren County, Rachel is survived by her cousins, Suzanne Britt, Tim Gillenwater and Beverly Scoggins. Survivors in Florida include three sons: Thomas Joel Chawk (Sandi), David Chawk (David Newcombe) and Terry Chawk; daughter-in-law, Bev Chawk; grandchildren, Joel and Matthew.
She was predeceased by her husbands,Thomas W. Chawk, Col. David Hood and her son, Gary Chawk.

Rachel will be buried in Clearwater, Florida.
