Elizabeth (Betty)'s Story
Elizabeth (Betty) Lee Harward Jolly, 78, of Richmond, Va., died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at her daughter's home.
She was born Nov. 10, 1938, in Cookeville, Tennessee, daughter of the late Margaret Louise Stanton Harward and William Leon Harward.
Betty worked in public service in higher education as government liaison director for three Virginia universities and was an appointee in the administrations of two governors. She was an avid reader and writer and political activist. She served on several boards including the Board of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), the Board of Visitors of James Madison University and the Garden Club of Virginia.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Franklin Jolly.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Meg) Rutkowski and husband, James, of Richmond, and Anne J. Schlussler and husband, Daniel, of Richmond; five grandchildren, Jack Rutkowski, Duncan Rutkowski, Ava Rutkowski, Emma Schlussler and Cate Schlussler, of Richmond; her brother, William Leon (Bill) Harward Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Danville, Kentucky; and nephews, Will Harward and Ben Harward.

Her service will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (815 E. Grace Street, Richmond, VA) at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 20 followed by a celebration of life at Juleps Restaurant from 2-4 p.m. A private burial will be held in Harrisonburg on Saturday, July 22, followed by a reception for friends and family at Spotswood Country Club from 2-4 p.m.
